QUESTION: Did Sri Lankan Tamils achieve anything after taking a violent path for thirty years?

ANSWER: The question that must be asked here should be :

Who forced Tamils in Sri Lanka to take the violent path?

The answer to this question is the “Linguistic Imperialism" of Sinhala Sri Lankans in imposing Sinhala on Tamils living in Sri Lanka.

In 1956, Sri Lankan Parliament implemented an act popularly called as “ Sinhala Only Act “

The Official Language Act (No. 33 of 1956), commonly referred to as the Sinhala Only Act, was an act passed in the Parliament of Ceylon in 1956. The act replaced English with Sinhala as the sole official language of Ceylon, with the exclusion of Tamil.

Tamils in Sri Lanka were unhappy with this act and therefore they demanded a “Tamil Eelam" so that they need NOT have to be a colony of Sinhala speaking Sri Lankans.

Instead of respecting the self-determination rights of Tamilians in Sri Lanka to decide their destiny, Sinhala politicians due to their false ego decided to use force and Tamilians had to retaliate.

The Sri Lankan civil war could have been easily avoided if the policy makers in Sri Lanka had the wisdom to follow the Swiss Model of Democracy of mutual respect.

However, that didn't happen and four decades of civil war denied the island country to prosper economically to withstand the covid economic recession.

Coming back to the question, what did Sri Lankan Tamils achieve?

Sri Lankan Tamils achieved to ensure Sinhala Imperialists are NOT living happily after committing atrocities on innocent Sri Lankan Tamils because today the country is bankrupt.

(citizenship act).

Coming back to the question, what did Sri Lankan Tamils achieve?

Nothing because of their differential attitude and their policies like caste oppression, regional oppression etc. Tamils are a differential society, and not an integrating society.

It’s not because of the Tamils that they (SL) went bankrupt, except for their foolish bribery and corrupt practices of the Sinhalese. They focused on Tamils and terrorism and wanted to show their muscle and went and bought millions worth of arms and invested heavily in arbitrary projects.

Sinhalese are fools. They now accept that. Their policy is to collect votes by using Tamils as the trump card, which was useful as per the Tamil’s policies. It is now assumed that the island will be a Sinhala Buddhist country as the Elite Tamils oppressed the Sinhalese, Tamil, and Indian Tamils. Even in this 21st century, the damn Tamil Diaspora is differentiating between the Tamil castes overseas. They do not know to whom their children are marrying. Deep thinking is required.

Magnanimity of Sri Lankan Reconciliation Act

By Engr. Kanthar Balanathan

Former Director of Power Engineering Solutions Pty Ltd, Consulting Electrical Engineers

1.    Political Situation

Sri Lanka may be returning to its normal peaceful balanced static and dynamic situation with the approval of the IMF fund. However, it’s a loss to understand as to why people lighted firecrackers and celebrated on the streets of Colombo. This is why the writer stated in one of his articles as the literacy rate does not limit to people who can read and write but understand what they read.

The gravity of the Sri Lankan economy and people's ambitious situation should be understood by all people.

Quote Ref: What are moral rights in Sri Lanka?

The rights take two forms: (a) economic rights and (b) moral rights. Economic rights include the right to reproduce, sell, rent, distribute, communicate with the public, and translate etc. whereas moral rights cover the right to claim the authorship and right to oppose distortion or mutilation of the work.

Could we agree that (a) is in full form? Not in full.

(b) is practised in full form. People and students are on the road fully disagreeing with what the government gives them.

2.    LTTE

LTTE is a defunct terrorist group. Some crooks who are money mongers are trying to say that LTTE is alive. LTTE was wiped out in 2009 under the military Command of Gen Sarath Fonseka. GOSL and the citizens should not worry about the defunct LTTE.

Only those corrupt Tamils who have no principles in their mind are using the LTTE to collect money and become rich. Already those LTTE funds have been invested in Supermarkets, Shopping complexes, conference halls, and businesses elsewhere. They will be punished as the curse has been thrown at them.

Tamils build temples in overseas countries. They get grants and aids from their local state and governments. Tamils cannot boast that they built the temples with their own money.

GOSL should not worry about LTTE. That does not mean that the service of the Sri Lankan intelligence organisation should sleep but be active as usual.

At the current period, GOSL and the People should trust only those who are honest and trustworthy, which is Hon Doulas Devananda and the EPDP.

3.    Reconciliation

Quote; Title: Strengthening Reconciliation Processes in Sri Lanka

The reconciliation process in Sri Lanka is strengthened. Governmental and non-governmental organisations in Sri Lanka address key aspects of the reconciliation process jointly.

Yes, everything except the hurt minds of the Tamils has not been sobered. Now that the situation is returning to normal, GOSL should review their status and pass a resolution to “Tender an Apology” for the burning of the Jaffna Library in 1981, and record it in the gazette. This will cool the minds and the thoughts of the Tamil people and the politicians.

The tender of the apology should be passed by the parliament of the GOSL.

The writer considers this act as a diplomatic and magnanimous act only.

The writer wishes to add that he has donated more than three dozen engineering books to the University of Moratuwa, to which he is indebted to the rest of his life.

Is Sri Lanka Driven to Another Diego Garcia

1.     Political Illiteracy

Right from the inception of gaining independence, Sri Lanka behaved like a third world underdeveloped country full of racial-minded illiterates. On receiving independence, DS Senanayake’s regime disfranchised one million Indian estate workers, which we cannot blame DSS as he felt opponents were trying to undercut him and the UNP.

SJV Chelvanayagam started his turbulence of the Federal Party which he could have demanded when the British were ruling. SJVC started this racial slogan to be in power.

Quote:

Race refers to a person's physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye colour. Ethnicity, however, refers to cultural factors, including nationality, regional culture, ancestry, and language.

Quote: Race refers to the concept of dividing people into groups based on various sets of physical characteristics and the process of ascribing social meaning to those groups. Ethnicity describes the culture of people in each geographic region, including their language, heritage, religion, and customs.

How and where can someone differentiate between the Sinhalese and the Tamils? The only difference is the language. The ancestry of the Sinhalese and Tamils origins in the same centre. Political activism by the Sinhalese: Among the Sinhalese, regional hatred progressed between the Upcountry Sinhalese (UC) and the Low Country (LC) Sinhalese. History will prove that the Low country Sinhalese assimilated with the Burmese, and Indonesians over the years as the Indian Kings brought people from an island called “Kadara Theevu” which is the Indonesian islands. The physical appearance will prove the difference between the Upcountry and the low-country Sinhalese. The upcountry Sinhalese is mixed with mostly Malabar and Tamils. The two Sinhalese groups inherently generated the differences.

However, since the British captured SL, people have lived in one nation called “Ceylon”. The two groups spoke the same language and practised the same religion. Politically the Sinhalese had their difference and avidity for power. No wonder Mahinda Rajapaksa wasted billions of dollars in developing the South which yielded no return on investment. Tamils are no different people; the only difference is the language. Basically, the people in Sri Lanka had no vision or mission to achieve peace and reputed economic status in the world.

One section supported the west and the other the east blended with Communism. There was and is no Unity and patriotism among the people.

Tamils are entrepreneurs and always supported the west. The Sinhalese are hardworking people in the South and the then governments neglected them.

The political competition made the sections always direct the other that the Tamils are trying to take over the country, to collect the VOTES. This cumulative effect mothballed and introduced racial conflicts between the Sinhalese and the Tamils. Even now most Sinhala politicians are focused on blaming the Tamils to collect votes. This leads intellectuals to judge the Sinhalese as FOOLS. Terrorism crept into the country via JVP and LTTE which led the country to lose hundreds of thousands of people die and loss of billions of dollars in assets.

Tamils did not govern the country and they had no power. 100% of decisions on 100% of activities were decided by the Sinhalese. Tamils were like slaves under the Sinhalese. This led the country to love and practice bribery and corruption. The Rajapaksas were the champions of bribery and corruption. Today the country went bankrupt.

(i)            The Current President (RW) when he was the PM under Sirisena: (i) RW wanted to construct a bridge between Mannar and India. The cost was estimated to be five billion dollars. People objected to this and was given up.

(ii)           The Central Bank affair of Bond sale by Arjuna Mahendran who was not a citizen of SL.

(iii)         RW commenced the corridor plan between Trincomalee and Colombo for the USA.

Currently, the shameful act by the GOSL is as follows:  https://www.themorning.lk/articles/106131.

Quote: Excerpt from the Morning paperIn addition, a special investigation has also been launched by Sri Lanka Customs and investigations are underway into the customs officials who assisted in the deportation of the areca nut containers.  According to sources attached to the Department of Police, an investigation into a tip-off received by a senior customs official has revealed that 21 containers of areca nut, imported from Indonesia, were fraudulently re-exported to India.   While four containers are being shipped from Sri Lanka, it has been revealed that the containers of areca nuts imported from Indonesia were illegally sent by a local exporter to India.  It has also been revealed that a stock of areca nuts, imported from Indonesia, worth over Rs. 350 million has been fraudulently re-exported to India. The stock of areca nuts was re-exported in 24 containers in August, September, and October, The Sunday Morning learnt.  It is also said that these areca nuts were imported using the active free trade agreement between Sri Lanka and India.  According to Customs, only three containers of areca nuts were procured from Sri Lanka and the remaining 21 containers were imported from Indonesia.  The bulk of the imported areca nuts have been exported to an Indian company, indicating that they are made in Sri Lanka, it is learnt.  Attempts to contact Sri Lanka Customs Director General Maj. Gen. (Retd.) Vijitha Ravi Priya and Sri Lanka Customs Additional Director General Sunil Jayaratne were futile.

This is the worst act any country’s administration can do to its people. This is how Sri Lankan authorities collect their cuts and kickbacks. This is just one example. SL has no FOREX. However, GOSL still imports cars and motorbikes.

2.     Shortfall in the Perception of Patriotism

The author is eighty years old and had worked in various countries and SL. The author judges the best PM and TEAM had been Srimavo Bandaranaike, Dr NM Perera, Felix Dias Bandaranaike, and Peter Keneman. Bribery and Corruption had been quite minimal and no corruption at all. The author was able to get things done in any department with no bribe within a short time. Those days are gone.

SL has ambassadors and Secretaries in their foreign offices. Are they not supposed to practice marketing techniques for Sri Lankan products?

It surfaces that the current regime is helping another country to make sure people leave Sri Lanka and leave illiterates and poor in SL so that the country can be converted as another Diego Garcia for a country to establish its base to strengthen its military power in the East.

Tax System in Sri Lanka

By Engr. Kanthar Balanathan

DipEE (UK), GradCert (RelEng-Monash), DipBus&Adm (Finance-Massey), C.Eng., MIEE,

Former Director of Power Engineering Solutions Pty Ltd, Consulting Electrical Engineers

1.     Illiteracy in Sri Lanka

Quote from Google Ref:

According to our estimates, 15,085,783 persons or 92.64% of the adult population (aged 15 years and above) in Sri Lanka can read and write. Accordingly, about 1,198,962 adults are illiterate. The literacy rate for the adult male population is 93.63% (7,360,933 persons). 500,960 are illiterate.

Conflict of interest in interpreting literacy rates. Reading and writing do not mean that people can understand what they are reading.

Perceptive Cognitive Skills: Quote Ref:

Traditionally, perceptual-cognitive skills have been defined as the ability to identify and process environmental information, and integrate them with pre-existing knowledge and motor capabilities, to select and execute adequate actions (e.g., Marteniuk, 1976).

Now, how many people have perceptive cognitive skills in SL?

Most unskilled workers may have zero ability to understand special and mathematical skills.

2.     Taxation

Currently, every Tom, Dick and Harry in SL is on the road protesting against the tax system. Even the Sri Lankan diaspora (most of them) is opposed to the tax system.

Let us discuss the population in SL:

The total population in SL is 22.16 million.

The parliament consists of the following: Quote: Of the 225 members, 196 are elected from 22 electoral districts, which are multi-member. The remaining 29 MPs are elected from National Lists allocated to the parties (and independent groups) in proportion to their share of the national vote.

Most of the Sri Lankan diaspora is questioning whether the MPs are paying taxes. The important thing to understand is that most MPs have not even paid their electricity, and water bills and maybe rates for their own houses. The importance here is the total number in parliament is only 225 No against the 22.16 million people. Even if half of the number works and must pay tax, it’s their obligation to satisfy the rules of the tax system.

Protesting taxation may be a criminal act. Government cannot give everything free to the people. SL government provides free health, education subsidised transport and other essential goods. Further, the corrupt system of parliament drives the country to poverty. The people shall understand how many unskilled workers get more than Rs 100,000 / month.

Quote Ref: https://www.icalculator.info/sri-lanka/salary-example/120000.html

A person receiving Rs 120,000 per year must pay only Rs. 7,200.00 per year. The person receives Rs 9,400 per month. Is this amount adequate for a family to survive as per the commodity price schedule prepared by the Central Bank?

Tax Rate Taxable Income Threshold

6% Income from Rs 0.00 to Rs 500,000.00

12% Income from Rs 500,000.01 to Rs 1,000,000.00

18% Income from Rs 1,000,000.01 to Rs 1,500,000.00

24% Income from Rs 1,500,000.01 to Rs 2,000,000.00

30% Income from Rs 2,000,000.01 to Rs 2,500,000.00

The minimum wage for an unskilled worker is Rs 12,500.00 per month. Quote Ref; https://salary.lk/salary/minimum-wage

The government states a minimum wage of Rs 400.00 per day. Can we get the labour for Rs 400.00 per day in the rural areas? No.

In 2014, the writer understood that unskilled workers were demanding Rs 1000.00 per day for unskilled work in the North. How about now? Government specifications and laws are different from the actual status of wages in the private industry.

https://numbers.lk/analysis/ceb-engineers-salary-scales-and-allowances-leak.

With highly paid engineers at the CEB, how come the electricity supply is in trouble?

It is assumed that Central Bank carries out extensive statistical studies on commodity prices and the near estimate of Rupees per month required by a family per month. Based on this the tax department is expected to prepare the tax schedule in consultation with the finance ministry and the Central Bank.

Commodity prices are evaluated and judged whether families can survive, which is the reason Central Bank carries out the statistical analysis. There shall be a balanced income with the commodity prices. Either the commodity prices shall drop down, or the salaries be increased for families to survive.

What can be found now in SL is that there is a large difference in income between professionals and unskilled workers. The unskilled workers are expected to survive on what they receive, which is impossible at the current time with quite high commodity prices.

The important thoughts are that everyone shall pay their taxes. All the micro-enterprises shall be expected to register with the tax department and every breadwinner shall receive a tax file number. With the current computerised system in SL, every person shall have a tax file number which could be linked with the NIC. Citizens shall be honest to pay all their dues in time to the government to receive their free health, education, subsidised transport etc. This may help the government to bring down commodity prices. The tax schedule shall not be prepared arbitrarily.

To be a more effective and efficient system the three sections are expected to coordinate, cooperate, and communicate with each other to prepare a sound tax system.

Government cannot expect a family to survive on Rs 400.00 per day with the current commodity prices.
